    Simultaneous Interpreting

    What simultaneous interpreting is

In simultaneous interpreting the interpreter renders the speech as it happens, with a delay of a few seconds. The audience listens through headsets and the event runs at its normal pace, which is what makes it the only workable option for a conference or a broadcast.

Interpreters always work in pairs. The cognitive load is high enough that concentration cannot be sustained alone for long, so two interpreters share a booth and rotate roughly every twenty to thirty minutes. A supplier offering a single interpreter for a full day is cutting a corner that shows in the second half of the event.

The setup includes a soundproof booth, the interpreter console, a transmitter and headsets for the audience, with a technician on site. For online events the same principle applies on a remote interpreting platform, with the interpreters connected from a hub or from their own booths.

Planning starts with the agenda. Number of languages, event duration, room layout and audience size determine the number of booths and interpreters, and those decisions are cheaper to make early than late.

    What simultaneous interpreting costs

The quote has two parts: the interpreters, always in pairs per language, and the equipment, which covers booth, console, transmitter, headsets and a technician on site. Both are priced by day or half day.

Headset count is the variable that moves most: it follows audience size and is quoted per unit. Give us a realistic number early, since adjusting it close to the date is the most common source of last-minute cost.

For online events the equipment line is replaced by the remote interpreting platform, which is usually cheaper, and travel disappears. The interpreters still work in pairs.

From the first contact I was well looked after, transparency at every stage and not a single problem with them, a fair price for all the work done. I do not live in Brazil and they handled every step to send my daughter’s certificate, already apostilled, here to the US.

    Frequently asked questions

    Simultaneous Interpreting

Why do you always quote two interpreters per language?

Because the cognitive load of simultaneous interpreting cannot be sustained alone for long. Two interpreters share a booth and rotate every twenty to thirty minutes. A single interpreter for a full day is a corner that shows in the second half of the event.

    What equipment is included?

A soundproof booth, the interpreter console, a transmitter, headsets for the audience and a technician on site for the duration. The headset count follows audience size and is quoted per unit.

    Do you do online events?

Yes. The same principle applies on a remote interpreting platform, with interpreters connected from a hub or from their own booths. It is usually cheaper, because equipment hire and travel fall away.

When should simultaneous be chosen over consecutive?

When the audience listens rather than converses, and when the schedule cannot afford to run at half speed. As a rule of thumb, above about thirty people simultaneous is the answer.

How far in advance should I book?

As early as possible. Interpreters and booths are both finite on a given date, and for less common languages availability is the binding constraint. Booking early also means the room layout can be planned around the booth rather than the other way round.

Should I send material in advance?

Yes. Agenda, slide decks, speaker names and a glossary of product terms make a measurable difference. Everything is treated confidentially, and a confidentiality agreement is signed when your organisation requires one.
