    What a sworn translation is

In Brazil, a sworn translation is a translation that carries public faith. It is produced by a tradutor público, a public translator registered with a state Board of Trade after passing a public examination. Only that translation has legal effect before public bodies, notaries, consulates and universities. An ordinary translation, however good, does not replace it when the document needs official standing.

Where the translator is registered no longer matters. Under Law 14.195/2021, a public translator registered with any Brazilian Board of Trade may work anywhere in the country. Eko’s is in São Paulo and serves clients across Brazil and abroad.

The translation reproduces the document in full, including stamps, seals, signatures and marginal notes, and states which version it was made from: a plain copy, a certified copy or the original. Some authorities require the translation to have been produced from an original or a certified copy, so it is worth checking that before you start.

Delivery is normally a file signed with an ICP-Brasil digital certificate, the Brazilian public key infrastructure. It carries the same validity as a printed copy and is accepted by most Brazilian bodies and by many consulates. Where a wet signature on paper is still required, the hard copy is posted to you.

    What a sworn translation costs

Sworn translation in Brazil is priced by lauda of translated text, not by page of the original. A lauda is a character-count unit, which means a one-page certificate can run to more than one lauda when it carries a lot of text, stamps and marginal notes.

That is why the quote is made on the actual document rather than estimated. You send a legible photo or a PDF and receive a closed price and a defined deadline within 1 business hour, and the price does not move after that.

English, Spanish, Italian, French and German are the most requested pairs and the quickest. Less widely spoken languages depend on the availability of a public translator certified in that pair.

From the first contact I was well looked after, transparency at every stage and not a single problem with them, a fair price for all the work done. I do not live in Brazil and they handled every step to send my daughter’s certificate, already apostilled, here to the US.

    Frequently asked questions

    Sworn Translation

    What is a sworn translation?

A translation carrying public faith, produced by a public translator registered with a Brazilian state Board of Trade. It is the only kind of translation with legal effect before public bodies, notaries, consulates and universities.

Is a digitally signed sworn translation valid?

Yes. A translation signed with an ICP-Brasil digital certificate has the same validity as a printed copy and is accepted by most Brazilian bodies and by many consulates. Some destinations still require a wet signature on paper, and we advise case by case before delivery.

Do you need the original document?

To quote and to translate, a legible image or a PDF is enough. The translation states which version it was made from. Some authorities require it to have been made from an original or a certified copy, and in those cases the document has to be presented.

Do I need an apostille, and in what order?

The Hague Apostille is required when the document is going to a country party to the Convention. The usual sequence is to apostille the original at a notary, translate the already apostilled document and, where the destination requires it, apostille the translation as well. The order varies by country, so confirm before you begin.

Is a translation made in São Paulo valid in other Brazilian states?

Yes. Under Law 14.195/2021 a public translator registered with any Board of Trade may work throughout Brazil. Eko’s serves clients in every state and abroad.

    How long does it take?

Short documents such as certificates are usually ready in 1 to 3 business days. Larger volumes and less common language pairs take longer. The exact deadline comes with the quote, and express delivery is available.
