Poland has been a unified country since the 10th century, and during its history it went through numerous reforms, the largest of all after Second World War, when it was invaded by Germany and Soviet Union, and reconstructed thanks to the help of Western countries.
The name Polska comes from the Polans’ tribe, which means “people who cultivate the land”, and Poland derives from the word pole, which means “field”. Those tribes inhabited the Greater Poland region, mainly the banks of the Warta river.
Polish economy is based on the shipbuilding industries, coal production, and electric energy. The most important industrial concentration is located in Silesia, a region rich in mineral coal, with steel and chemical industries.
The Polish language is one of the Slavic languages, and is spoken not only in Poland, but also in Latvia, Belarus, and Ukraine. It is the second Slavic language most spoken in the world after Russian. An interesting fact is that Curitiba is the second city outside of Poland with the largest number of inhabitants of Polish origin. This is why it is easier to find translators from this language in the Southern region in Brazil.
In terms of gastronomy, Poland and Russia claim to have invented vodka. It is not known exactly where the drink was created, as vodka was mentioned in Polish texts for the first time in 1643. Even though it is not possible to say where the drink was created, it is considered the national Polish drink.
In Poland, vodka is not mixed, not even with ice. It must be consumed cold and pure. And asking for vodka from other countries, especially from Russia, is even offensive to Poles. Moreover, vodka must be drunk with friends, and not alone, and the whole glass should be drunk in one go.
Poland’s most popular dish is pierogi, a filled dumpling that may be boiled or fried, similar to a Japanese gyoza and with the most diverse savory and sweet fillings, and it is more common to fill it with meat, sauerkraut, and mushrooms.
In the Polish national team, Robert Lewandowski is the main player. He was elected the best player in the world for two consecutive years, in 2020 and 2021, when he played for Bayern Munich. Lewandowski was champion in the German League 10 times, two of them as a Borussia Dortmund player and another 8 times with Bayern, and was top scorer 7 times.
His spectacular numbers attracted the interest of Barcelona, which signed the player for 45 million euros in the last transfer window. This season, his first in Spain, Lewandowski has already 12 goals in 10 matches. Playing for his national team, he has a history of 76 goals in 134 matches.
He is certainly Poland’s greatest hope for goals and, if he keeps up his Barcelona performance, the Polish national team has the chance to advance in the World Cup.
