Understanding the differences between Sworn Translation, Certified Translation and Technical Translation

27 Jul, 2022

When we look for a translation, we usually find terms like sworn translation, certified translation and technical translation and these many different options can naturally get us confused. Which translation service should you choose? Let’s find out here.

Sworn Translation

Let’s look at the most common type: sworn translation. It is indicated when you need to translate a document issued abroad that must be officially accepted in Brazil. For the document translation to be legally valid, a sworn translator is required to perform the service and such professional needs to be approved in a public examination to become a sworn translator (for more detailed information on sworn translation, click here to access the service description content).

Certified Translation

Certified translation is used when you need to translate a document issued in Brazil into another language. For this type of translation, the professional who performed the service must sign the document and include his/her contact information, such as phone number. The certified translator also issues a statement attesting that the translated version of the document is correct and that the information is in accordance with the original version. Unlike sworn translation, where the professional must be approved in a public examination, the translator must be certified by ATA (American Translators Association).

Technical Translation

Technical translation is used when the material to be translated has a technical specification. In these cases, the translator not only has to be proficient in the language, but master the singularities of each area. For example, when translating a package insert of a drug, the translator needs to have technical knowledge in the area of medicine, because the information is related to a medical context. The same principle is applicable to other areas, such as legal, automotive, financial, etc.

Sworn Translation

Sworn translation is a translation service with proven authenticity. Unlike regular texts or articles, official documents that need to be translated into another language must have this authenticity, ensuring that the translation is true and correct, without any change to the content included in the document.

Simultaneous Interpreting

Simultaneous Interpreting is the service where the simultaneous translator or interpreter translates what the speaker says in real time. For this type of service, the listeners wear headphones and may choose to listen to the speaker’s voice or the simultaneous translation. This type of translation is usually used for lectures, large global business conferences and congresses.
