Curiosities

On April 21, 1500, when the Portuguese expedition caught sight of Mount Pascoal, the captain Pedro Álvares Cabral heard the sentence “Land at sight”, and Brazil was discovered by the Portuguese.

Mount Pascoal still exists and is located in Cumuruxatiba, a district of Prado, in Bahia. The region is an indigenous reserve, and the tour to the first piece of land sighted by the Portuguese expedition is conducted by native guides.

The history of Brazil started to be written in 1500 and, since then, the country went through intense transformations over time, going through a period when it was a colony, then it became an empire, and had the republic proclaimed in 1889.

The word Brazil means red as ember, and refers to the color of the wood that was used to dye the Native people fabrics, pau-brasil. Pau-brasil became an endangered species due to the Portuguese exploitation, but nowadays it is possible to find the tree that named the country across the territory, although in much less quantity when compared to the pre-colonial period.

One fifth of all the fresh water existing in the planet is in the rivers of Amazon Basin, and the largest river of the world is Amazon River, with 7 thousand kilometers in extension.

Due to its extension, Brazil has a very diverse economy. In some regions of the country, such as the Midwest, the livestock is the main activity; in the South, the sector of services and industries, mainly food industry, is the one that has the most prominence, and in the North East region, the tourism and sugar cane production are the main practices.

Before the discovery, Brazil used to speak over 1,000 languages, and nowadays, there are only 180 surviving native languages, with only 11 spoken by over 5,000 people. The country language became Portuguese after colonization; however, the Brazilian Portuguese is very different from that spoken in Portugal, including some words that have totally different meanings. However, there is no translation from Portugal Portuguese into Brazilian Portuguese, but there is a dialect adjustment. And every translation made from Portuguese into another language is called a version. To translate documents from Portuguese or make versions of documents from Portuguese into another language, always seek a professional translator.

The Brazilian cuisine is extremely rich, from açaí, a Brazilian fruit that is exported globally, to rice and beans, the most eaten dish in the national territory; Brazilians use their creativity to develop dishes full of colors and flavors. The most famous dish is for sure feijoada, which is prepared using black beans, assorted cuts of pork, and dried and smoked meats. Everything is cooked in a large pan, and the different cuts of meat are united with spices and the beans, making everything with a unique flavor.

Brazil is the only five-time champion, and the country is known for revealing countless stars throughout the history: Romário, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho Gaúcho, Neymar, and the King of soccer, Pelé.

The Brazilian team comes from a great campaign in the World Cup qualification. During the contest for a spot, the Brazilian team remained unbeaten and arrives in Qatar as one of the favorite teams. Neymar Jr. is again the main player in the Brazilian team in the World Cup.

After leaving with an injury in 2014 and seeing the team being eliminated in 2018, this is probably the last Neymar’s World Cup as the main player in the Brazilian team. The forward player was transferred to PSG in 2017, at that time for the highest value in history, 222 million Euros and, since he arrived in Paris, he has lived a love/hate relationship with the French club fans. At this time, Neymar is supported by the Parisian crowd, which sees the player focused on helping the club and even more focused on winning the 6th World Cup championship.
