Curiosities

The United States is a country that does not have a specific name. Its name shows that its states are united in a federation, and this contributes to the American political culture in which each state has its own laws.

The United States originated from 13 English colonies that declared their independence on 4th of July, 1776, and, after winning the independence war, expanded its territory by buying lands from other countries or winning armed conflicts.

The English spoken in the United States is the most spoken language in the world, and is used as a common language even in places where the official language is not English. For instance, a Brazilian can communicate in English in the Netherlands without major problems. Thus, the translation of documents in English represents the main service provided in the translation market worldwide, either from English into the country’s native language or vice-versa. But those who think translating from English is a simple task, or those who think that everyone who can speak English can translate accurately, are mistaken. The main challenge for a translator is to adapt jargons or specific terms that many times do not have synonyms in the target language; hence the importance of hiring a translation company.

In terms of economy, the United States is the world’s largest power, its currency serves as a reference for all international markets, and the country is known for being the cradle of the modern capitalism, as well as for exporting commodities such as oil and gas, creating market trends, and influencing the whole global macroeconomic system.

American gastronomy is centered around fast food. As Americans have a very busy lifestyle, people prefer to have fast meals, and the main fast food chains in the world were created there. Thus, we highlight here a dish that Brazilians love: the hamburger.

It is impossible to walk through American cities and not find a fast-food restaurant selling burgers with different types of cheese, bread, sauce, and salads. But the most traditional one is the cheeseburger, with bread, hamburger, and cheese.

Curiously, the hamburger did not originate in the United States. It was created in Germany around the time of the Crusades, in which horsemen put the meat, which was tough, under the saddle of the horse to make it tender; then, with the friction, the meat would become minced and, in this way, the idea of hamburger as a flattened meatball originated. However, it was only when it was taken to America by German immigrants that the hamburger was served with bread and started being consumed as it is today.

On the field, the US national soccer team will participate in the World Cup for the 11th time, as it did not qualify in 2018. Its best result was in 1930, when it finished in the third place (it was the first edition of the tournament, and only 13 national teams participated).

This world cup may serve as a preparation for the US national team, as the country will be the next host country and has been investing in improving soccer within its national tournament, MLS (Major League Soccer), for years.

Their best player is Christian Pulisic, the Chelsea striker who started his career in Germany and has been a second string at the London club, but is still the most technical player in the US national team, which also features Sergiño Dest and Giovanni Reyna.
