Curiosities
Ranked 4th in the South American qualifiers, this is only the 4th time Ecuador is participating in the World Cup. Its best campaign was in 2006, when it was defeated by England in the Round of 16.
Ecuador’s economy is based on the export of oil, banana, shrimp, gold, and other agricultural products. It is worth mentioning that Ecuador is a member of OPEC (Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries) and produces nearly 490,000 barrels of oil per day.
Its language, as in the majority of Latin America, is Spanish, but its inhabitants also speak Quechua, a language spoken by the native South American people from Peru. Spanish translation is usually requested for documents issued in Ecuador. Even though the Spanish spoken there is pretty similar to the ones spoken in Peru and Bolivia, in some places of Ecuador there is the Amazonian Spanish, which is strongly influenced by native languages such as Quechua.
In terms of cuisine, a dish that draws a lot of attention is Bolón de Verde, a round dumpling made of fried green plantains (or plátano, in Spanish) that can also be stuffed.
Green plantains are present in several dishes of the Ecuadorian cuisine, and can be eaten alone or as a side dish.
The main name of this national team is captain Enner Valencia, who played in the Premier League and today plays for Fenerbahçe, in Turkey. In his national team, he scored 35 goals in 72 matches, 9 of them during the World Cup qualifiers.
