Subtitling service exists since the 1980s. This service basically consists of transforming what is being said into text and is used in video lessons, corporate videos, music videoclips and especially in films and series.
One of the advantages of consuming subtitled content is that the viewer can perceive details, such as intonation and accent. However, there are many challenges in the subtitling process: it is necessary to adapt sayings, jokes, and sentences with specific meanings in their original languages, which lose their meaning if translated exactly as they mean or “word for word”.
Therefore, it is often common for those who have already mastered the original language of the subtitled content to perceive adaptations and subtitles that are different from what is actually being said. In the case of subtitling, the most important thing is that the viewer can understand the meaning of the sentences, even when popular sayings from other languages are being used.
Subtitling has become popular in recent years thanks to streaming services that give viewers the possibility to choose the audio and subtitle languages that suit them best. These platforms mainly use subtitling services in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, where the main studios are located.
Eko’s Traduções has already subtitled the content from a franchise that exists for over 20 years and has millions of fans around the world for one of the main streaming platforms in Brazil.
How the subtitling service works
To subtitle a content, it is necessary that what is being said in the video is first transcribed in its original language. After the transcription, the translation service is performed and, with the translation completed, the audio is synchronized with the subtitles. After the synchronization, the content is reviewed to ensure that the subtitles are synchronized with the audio and that the written content conveys the same meaning as the spoken content in the other language.
In subtitling, the maximum number of characters per line is 30 to 35 or 610 pixels, depending on the font size.
The reading time of the subtitle of two full lines (i.e., 60 characters) is 15 characters per second, staying on the screen between 4 and 6 seconds. And the subtitle entry time must be ¼ of a second after the beginning of the oral expression.
With all these standards and challenges, we realized that subtitling is something complex that requires serious professionals.
